DJ 9-Volt - Volume 41 - Valentine's Day Mix

Holidays are a big deal for my family. As is the case with many families, we are all so busy and spread out geographically that it’s tough to get everyone together in one place. I especially love spending time with my nieces and nephews, despite the fact that each year they get bigger and bigger making me feel older and older. And nothing makes me feel older than listening to their music with them. Full disclosure – I’ve started spending more time tuned into the “Oldies” stations because, well, they’re starting to play more and more of the music I grew up with.

This year was no different. I sat down with my niece and let her choose the music for a while. Since I’d vetoed Bieber and One Direction before we even started (much to her chagrin), she played Jason Derulo’s “Marry Me,” and quickly followed it up with one of my personal favorites, Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are.”

In keeping with the theme of love songs, I played Brian Mcknight’s “One Last Cry,” and was appalled when she did not know it. I followed it up with Vanessa Williams’ “Save the Best for Last.” Sadly, she’d never heard that song either.

From the sad melodies of the lover’s lament songs to the suggestive lyrics of the smooth seduction songs, there’s nothing that showcases the many complexities of love quite like old-school R&B. This is the stuff middle and high school dances were made of.

When I sat down to record this mix, I just had to play out these songs in their entirety, because I felt that if I cut out the bridge, I’d often be cutting out the best (not to mention the most emotional) parts of the songs. Also, I wanted to record something that would remind my older listeners of the mixtapes we used to put together using a cassette and the radio to give to that special someone. Regardless of whether you know all of the songs or none of them, I hope everyone enjoys listening to this mix. One suggestion if I may – the mix is a lot better when you share it with someone you love. 😉

DJ 9-Volt Multi-tasking at Susan & Gary’s Battery Gardens Wedding Celebration in NYC!

Battery Gardens Wedding!

Gary & Susan - Battery Gardens Wedding

We here at The Remixologists pride ourselves on being able to multitask. We like to believe that we can do anything for any couple that calls on us. We’ve been DJ’s, emcees, bakers, photographers, audio technicians, video specialists…we even once had a DJ who decided he wanted to be both the DJ and the groom (*ahem* Taiga). Well, I (9-Volt) decided to add to that list by attempting the Best Man/DJ combo/Emcee for my college roommate, Gary’s, Battery Gardens Wedding.  Fortunately, rather than leave me to attempt this insanity, DJ Mike was able to come up and handle the DJ/Emcee responsibilities so that I could focus on being the best Best Man I could be (and honestly, we’re all glad he did).

Susan and Gary were married on August 11th at the Battery Gardens in New York City. Though the dancing was cut a bit short, DJ Mike was able to rock the crowd with a mix of Motown and Top 40. In fact, despite only being able to spin for about 40 minutes, DJ Mike kept everyone on the floor the entire time, so 40 minutes felt like 2 hours.

I’ve decided to dedicate Volume 40 of the DJ 9-Volt collection to Susan and Gary. I recorded it in the studio as though it was me who spun the wedding. The first few tracks were the entrance songs for the Bridal Party and the final song was the couple’s first dance. The mix’s title, “Music, Joy, and Love” is a nod to the toast I delivered in their honor.  Check out the mix and more pictures from the wedding below!

Congratulations, Susan and Gary. Thank you for letting me be a part of your special day.. Go Quakers!

DJ 9-Volt at Streetwise Partners Taste of Success!

I (Taiga) cannot take credit for this one!  Big shout out to our own Washington DC based DJ 9-Volt who made the trip out and rocked Providence NYC all night long!  If you want to read more about that fun night, check out his post here.

Streetwise Partners, thank you always for your kind words and it’s always a joy to serve the community in NYC!

Streetwise Partner's Taste Of Success 2012 Thank You Letter

Dear Simon,

On behalf of the StreetWise Partners’ network of friends, I would like to thank The Remixologists for making yet another one of our events truly a night to remember!  You provided the perfect soundtrack to our fifth annual Taste of Success event, and guests were gushing about what an excellent time they had at the event and after-party.  We all look forward to having you at our next fundraiser!

With your support, events like Taste of Success make it possible for StreetWise Partners to continue serving the motivated, low-income job seekers in New York City.  Because of your generosity, we can have greater impact and assist under-served individuals in achieving economic self-sufficiency.

As always, we are happy to spread the word about The Remixologists…

Thank you for making Taste of Success such a great event!

Taste of Success 2012 at Providence NYC!

Taste Of Success 2012

For the third year in a row, The Remixologists were invited to spin Streetwise Partners‘ Taste of Success fundraisers. The event featured food and wine from some of New York’s hottest proprietors, and it was all for a good cause. The event stands out among the things we’ve done, not just because it was for a good cause or because it was hosted by some great people, but because it’s definitely the longest event I’ve had to DJ solo, and believe me – I’ve been a part of some marathon DJ sessions.

The event itself began with an Executive Reception from 6:30-7:30 on April 19th at the Providence in midtown New York City. This was immediately followed by the main event which lasted until 10pm. But things didn’t end there. At 10pm, the party moved downstairs to the club area of the Providence and lasted until 1am. Talk about full day!

We’re honored to have been a part of this worthwhile event, and look forward to working with StreetWise again in the future.

Penn Alumni Party Like It’s 2002!

The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) holds a special place in all of The Remixologists’ hearts.  We all started our respective DJ careers on campus and have literally logged thousands of hours DJ’ing parties for student organizations, fraternities, sororities, museums, and university groups.   We’ve become one of UPenn’s go-to DJ companies for homecoming and reunion weekend, and I (DJ Mike) was extremely excited when the University asked me to DJ the 10-year reunion for the class of 2002.  While I always look forward to returning to campus and DJ’ing for my alma mater, this event would be even more special, given that it was the 10-year reunion of our very own DJ 9-Volt (Tristan).

The reunion was held on campus at the World Café Live!, and DJ 9-Volt and I made sure that everyone in attendance was able to dance the night away to many of the tracks we rocked during their undergraduate days.  Not only was it great seeing so many long-time friends and familiar faces, but it was also priceless being able to play some “classics” from artists such as Shanice, Fat Joe, Cam’ron, DJ Sammy, Mario, Missy, Aaliyah, Nelly, Puff Daddy, City High, B2K, Cutty Ranks, N’ Sync, the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, and Michael Jackson (just to name a few).

Ally & Matt’s Hotel Monaco Wedding In Alexandria!

0

When Ally and Matt first booked with us, I (DJ Mike) already knew that their wedding was going to be a blast.  Their reception was going to be held at the Hotel Monaco in Virginia, a location that combined the historic charm and lively culture of Old Town Alexandria.  Before the wedding, Ally and Matt told me that their family and friends all love to dance, but little did I know just how crazy the dance party was going to be!  We ended up shuffling around the schedule and having the cake cutting earlier in the evening, since many guests were getting restless during dinner and wanted to get the party started as soon as possible.  (Of course, I was more than happy to oblige!)

And once the party started, it never ended.  DJ 9-Volt and I rocked a mix of Motown, funk, top 40,  90’s hip hop, Michael Jackson, and Madonna, and we even threw down Call Me Maybe twice (at the bride’s request, of course).  The bridesmaids were well-prepared and were dancing in flip-flops for most of the evening, and many of the guests were wiping sweat off their brows by the time we were playing the last song of the evening…definitely signs of a great party and a successful evening!

Jeanne & Sean’s Baltimore Wedding Featured On United With Love!

Weddings are always more fun when you know a few of the guests.  They are especially fun when the people you know: a) love to dance, and b) remember you as the nerdy kid from high school.  That’s exactly what happened when I (9-Volt) handled Jeanne and Sean’s wedding this past January.  I’ve known Jeanne since we were in elementary school together on Guam, and I was ecstatic when she asked me to DJ her wedding.  Not only did I get to show off my skills in front of some old friends, but I was able to sprinkle in some island classics.

The George Peabody Library was amazing – it felt like I was in the Beauty and the Beast library, and I was half tempted to drop the Celine Dion/Peabo Bryson classic for the hell of it. In the end, I settled for the Percolator, seeing as how we were on the John’s Hopkins campus and the crowd was itching for some good Baltimore Club Music.

It’s an honor to have participated in this wedding and now it’s been featured on United We Love!  Click on the picture above or HERE to read more about the wedding!

And 축하합니다, 누나!!! Literally translated, “chuka hamnida, noo-nah” or “congratulations, big sister!”

Getting super personal FAN MAIL is super special!  Everybody pitched in for this wedding in the nation’s capital as wifey played bridesmaid for the day while Tristan (9-Volt) & I rocked the party.  What a great night!  Congrats Crystal & Frank!

Dear Monica and Simon,

Thank you so much for playing such an important role in our wedding and in our lives.  Your friendship, encouragement, and support mean the world to us.

Thank you for all your help and advice during the planning process.  Simon, thank you for running the show so smoothly and keeping the party going all night.

We’re excited for the future and know that we will be sharing many more happy memories in the years to come!

Throwback: DJ Mike & DJ 9-Volt Spinning The 2010 Halloween & Homecoming Celebration At The Hall of Flags (Houston Hall @ University of Pennsylvania)

1

Going back to campus (Go Quakers!) is always weird for me. No matter how many times I go back, I go through the same thing. I look around and the buildings look the same for the most part. There are still kids walking around headed to the cafeteria, to class, to the library, etc.

But no matter how little things have changed from the time when I was in school, things are invariably different.  I will not see a familiar face in the crowd. I will not run into a crowd of friends who will drag me to the bar instead of letting me study at the library. And parties? Forget about it. The chances of me seeing my friends’ faces light up when I play “our song” are slim to none.

Unless, of course, we’re DJ’ing the PAACH Anniversary Party and the Taste of Penn Homecoming Celebration.  Mike and I did just that this past Halloween.   It was great to see everyone getting down to the old songs, especially the line dancing. It was also one of the rare times that I got to walk around in public as my true self. That’s right, you heard it here first. DJ 9-Volt is just my cover identity. In reality, I am The Flash. And I’ve been working out. Can you tell?

In any case, all of the reminiscing led me to post this mix. I hope those of you listening can share in my nostalgia.

Peace and lumpia grease.

– 9Volt
